Amount paid monthly by Social Security to the primary informal carer who is a beneficiary of the Primary Informal Carer Support Allowance.
The monthly amount varies from carer to carer, as the allowance is calculated as the difference between the household’s total income and 1.1 (110%) of the Social Support Index (Indexante dos Apoios Sociais – IAS).
The maximum value of the allowance (in the absence of any other income) corresponds to 1.1 of the IAS, which in 2026 amounts to €590.84.
The Main Informal Carer Support Allowance is one of several support measures provided for in the Informal Carer Statute. This benefit aims to promote the fight against poverty among main informal carers who are permanently dedicated to providing care.
It was created by Law no. 100/2019, of 6 September, which approves the Informal Carer Statute, and by Regulatory Decree no. 1/2022, of 10 January in its current wording, which establishes the terms and conditions for recognising the status of informal carer, as well as support measures for informal carers and cared-for persons.
