Family allowance for children over 36 months of age (1st and 2nd income level)

An amount paid monthly by Social Security to children over 36 months of age who belong to families in the 1st and 2nd income levels.

Income support for children is calculated according to: (i) the age of the child or young person, (ii) the composition of the household and (iii) the household’s reference income, grouped into brackets indexed to the Social Support Index.

Public Policy Measure

The Family Allowance is a social benefit awarded monthly to compensate for family expenses related to the support and education of children and young people. It varies according to the age of the child and the composition and income of the household.

This social benefit was created by Decree-Law 176/2003, of 2 August, in its current wording, which institutes Income support for children and young people and defines protection in the event of family expenses within the scope of the family protection subsystem.
