Public Policy Measure
The National Palliative Care Network – Rede Nacional de Cuidados Paliativos (RNCP) aims to provide palliative care to sick people who, regardless of age and pathology, are suffering from a serious or incurable disease, with a limited prognosis and in an advanced and progressive stage.
The Palliative Care Units – Unidades de Cuidados Paliativos (UCP) are specific services for treating patients who require specialised, multidisciplinary palliative care, particularly in complex acute clinical situations. These inpatient units may be part of a hospital or other healthcare institution with inpatient services.
The legislation governing this measure is Law No. 52/2012 of 5 September, which enshrines the right and regulates citizens’ access to palliative care, defines the State’s responsibility for palliative care and creates the National Palliative Care Network.”
