Public Policy Measure
Electronic Monitoring is a system that, remotely, ensures the electronic monitoring of judicial decisions to confine a defendant or convict to a certain location, or makes it possible to detect the proximity of a defendant or convict to a certain geographical area or person, usually the victim in the case.
The aim of this measure is to ensure proper compliance with the court decision, to help promote a change in criminal behaviour and to safeguard community safety. It consists of a set of equipment, computer applications, communications networks and human and material means of action/reaction.
Electronic monitoring was created by Law no. 33/2010, of 2 September, which regulates the use of technical means of remote control (electronic monitoring) and repeals Law no. 122/99, of 20 August, which regulates the electronic monitoring provided for in article 201 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
