The amount of the unemployment benefit varies. The amount payable corresponds to 65% of the reference earnings and depends on the beneficiary’s age and on the number of months with registered contributions to Social Security since the last period of unemployment.
Unemployment Benefit is a payment granted to citizens who have involuntarily lost their job and are registered as job seekers at the Employment Center.
This social policy measure aims to compensate for the loss of work remuneration under the contributory Social Security scheme.
It was created by Decree-Law No. 220/2006 of 3 November, in its current version, which establishes the legal framework for social protection in the event of unemployment for employees.
